2008 ECAC Division 3 Championships
Saturday, March 15th, 2008, 1pm, Springfield College, Springfield, MA
By David F.P. (Scores from Troester.)

When the teams of the ECAC meet in Springfield this weekend there will be trips to division 3 nationals on the line as well as ECAC merits themselves. Ursinus College, SUNY Brockport, SUNY Cortland, Ithaca College, Springfield College, and MIT are the teams likely in the running for the three trips to nationals at Cortland. Though if Cortland does not win one of the three trips they still get to go by virtue of being the hosts. Brockport is the returning champion from last year and is surely in contention to repeat, but there are plenty of teams standing in their way.

Just some other random observations, MIT’s Julia Zimmerman is a NCAA regionals attendee from last year, and Senior Sophia Harrison has a lot of accolades including anchoring some events as well. Beyond that is an up and coming team showing scoring improvements throughout the season though some gymnasts have been unavailable in the lineup at various points.

Cortland keeps things very interesting on the Uneven Bars, and has at least two routines with releases, if not more. Their FX scores well too not surprisingly, including high’s like Amber French’s 9.725. Brockport’s floor routines as also power packed and score well, with Lauren Gildemeyer’s 9.85 as the high score, but she is but one of many really good floor performers on the team. Ithaca also put together high scoring bars rotations including release moves and their floor lineup goes deep in the scoring and they put a lot of twists into those routines.

Admittedly I didn’t get a chance to see much of Ursinus, but they’ve topped several Division 1 teams this year, and seem to have a well rounded scoring setup. I haven’t seen Wilson and don’t have many comments about Springfield as of yet. These observations aren’t meant to minimize any other aspects of the teams, they’re just what come to mind. The scores that follow indicate the obvious, there’s going to be a lot of talented gymnasts and teams in one place this Saturday!
